INTRO TO GRAND GUIGNOL
This workshop is an earnest approach to Grand Guignol: real suspense and full engagement in dark psychological themes - jealousy, madness, and fear.
* ACTING physically expressive melodrama + intensely psychological naturalism
* HISTORY lecture, articles, photos, and video
* SPECIAL EFFECTS highly guarded secrets of live gore making.
The Parisian Theatre du Grand Guignol (1890s-1960s), was most famous for horror plays and bloody special effects. Dubbed the "Theatre of Laughter and Terror," an evening alternated short pieces of farce, horror, and drama.
Attire: clothes you can easily move in, and clothes in which you can get messy. You may want to bring a snack and water.

PHYSICAL THEATRE WORKOUTS IN
play big * play ferocious * play to survive
COME PLAY: This is a theatrical workout to get you out of your head and into your body, intended for physical theatre artists looking for a 'workout,' actors to improve physical expression, and non-artists to sweat and have fun. Melodrama is the most expressive of Western theatre forms, closest to the theatrical impulse, expressed in heightened gesture, high stakes, bold characters, the struggle of virtue and vice, to music. It is Artaud's "athlete of the emotions." An inclusive and welcoming environment for all levels is important to us.
BRING: an open attitude, dressed to move, hair off face. Please put phones away during the workshop. After signing up, you will be emailed a liability waiver for the venue. Please bring a signed copy to the workout. Because the workshop is physical, fluids for hydration are recommended.
*To protect the integrity of the stage, no shoes will be permitted.
